There is a medical redshirt and then a standard redshirt. A medical redshirt is only offered if you are injured within the first 30% of the regular season. If you are in that range, you can apply to redshirt and not lose a year of eligibility. Now a regular redshirt is considered typically for a player who does not play during that season at all. This can mean that they practice, but if they do not appear in any games, they can apply to redshirt.
